Stockholm has been called the longest art gallery in the world. Its metro, underground or subway line (depending on where you’re from) holds at least half a day’s worth of adventure seeing what’s around the next corner. Having lived in London for 2 years, I think it’s fascinating how a city has made use of the extra real estate

ToggleMap of Stockholm best underground art stations
I’ve thrown in a description of each individually below but here’s a very quick map to show you where they all are!
1 – Solna Centurm
Solna Centrum is the most striking and vivid of Stockholms metro art stations. It is also the furthest out of the main city. 7 stops on the 11 line from Centrum will have you there
The Scene was painted in the 70’s, depicting green trees and burnt ground against a setting sun, representing the fragility of our planet… something which is more than ever relevant today.
2 – Tekniska Högskolan
Being the stop of the University of Technology, it’s only fair the artwork painted in 1973 represented the cutting edge of technological advancements.
The centrepoint of this station is the giant chandelier made of pentagons, representing Plato’s five elements: Fire, water, earth, air & ether… otherwise known as the five rings of Captain Planet.
3 – T-Centralen
It’s only fair the central station of Stockholm makes the list. It was the very first station to display artwork.
It was the first station of the blue line in the underground network so of course, the artwork is… Blue.
4 – Stadion
Stadion is home to Stockholm’s Olympic stadium and also the stop of Stockholm’s yearly pride festival. The station was also the first ‘cave’ station (it looks like you’re in a cave) which was controversial at the time as people feared they were close to the underworld. So the artist wanted to portray that the viewer is close to the surface while welcoming those to the pride festival.
5 – Rådhuset
While the cave system was controversial to begin with (as above) Rådhuset station embraced the natural architecture and colour elements to create a literal cave station. This was the first one I went to a it blew me away!
This is just the tip of the Iceberg
There are many more out there, however, these were my favourites. Now it’s time for you to go find them for yourself!
Inner-city content isn’t usually my thing however if you want to see more outdoorsy stuff feel free to check my HIKING and CLIMBING guides!
